DESIGNER'S NOTES
A blue Fox & Chave silk tie with a repeat print of the Concorde, the only supersonic aircraft to ever operate commercially.
Jointly developed by Great Britain and France via a 1962 treaty, Concorde was a triumph of twentieth-century aerospace engineering. Entering commercial service in 1976, it utilised four powerful Olympus 593 turbojets equipped with afterburners to cruise at Mach 2, flying from London to New York in under three and a half hours. Passengers who travelled at twice the speed of sound and at sixty thousand feet, were able to witness the curvature of the Earth.
High operating costs, immense fuel consumption, and restricted overland routes due to sonic booms limited its commercial viability. Following a crash in 2000 and a subsequent global economic slowdown, Concorde was permanently retired in 2003.
