DESIGNER'S NOTES

A bold floral Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf with a repeat pattern using the central detail from the work Change, Decorative motif, c.1920, by Edouard Benedictus (1878-1930).

Benedictus was something of a renaissance man, with a career as a chemist, composer and artist who actually invented laminated safety glass. This breakthrough came when he accidentally dropped a glass flask coated with a plastic cellulose nitrate film, noticing that it cracked but didn’t shatter.

As a decorative artist, he was associated with the Art Nouveau movement creating intricate textile and wallpaper designs, some of which were exhibited at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes—the event that then gave rise to the term Art Deco.

STYLING

A Fox & Chave habotai silk scarf can be worn with the classic knot style or a pussycat bow. You can even create a shawl effect by knotting two scarves together behind your neck and allowing them to drape over your shoulders. More scarf styling ideas are available in this wonderful How to Tie a Scarf book.
