This Fox & Chave silk tie features a simple yet magical design steeped in history, archeology and the mystery of Ancient Egypt.

Hieroglyphics, the script of ancient Egypt, is one of the oldest writing systems in the world, with origins tracing back to around 3300 BCE. This complex system uses a combination of logographic and alphabetic elements, including over 700 distinct symbols that could represent sounds, objects, or concepts. The writing was primarily used for religious texts, monumental inscriptions, and administrative documents, reflecting the social and religious fabric of ancient Egyptian civilisation.

Hieroglyphics were written on various materials such as stone, wood, and papyrus, and they adorned temple walls, tombs, and statues, serving as a tool for both communication and ceremonial purposes.

The decipherment of hieroglyphics remained elusive for centuries until the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799, which featured the same text in Greek, Demotic, and hieroglyphic scripts. By understanding the Greek text, researchers were able to match hieroglyphic symbols to their phonetic equivalents, unraveling the linguistic structure of ancient Egyptian and enabling a deeper comprehension of their culture, religion, and administration.

Hieroglyphics fell out of use after the fourth century CE as Egypt transitioned to Christianity and the Greek and Coptic scripts replaced it.
