The red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scotica) is a plump, medium-sized gamebird unique to the British Isles. It thrives exclusively in the uplands of Scotland, northern England, and Wales. Its primary habitat consists of sweeping heather moorlands, where it relies on young heather shoots for food and older, dense thickets for nesting and protection.

Culturally, the grouse holds a potent, layered significance in Britain. It symbolises the wild, untamed beauty of the British wilderness, while simultaneously representing traditional country life and elite sporting heritage. The annual commencement of the shooting season on August 12th, famously dubbed the Glorious Twelfth, remains a landmark event in British rural culture and economy.
