DESIGNER'S NOTES

A multi-coloured Fox & Chave silk habotai scarf featuring a stylised floral design typical of the Mughal tradition.

This type of design originates from the mid-17th century Mughal court and the reign of Shah Jahan, exemplifying the formal Flower Style. Here, earlier botanical realism evolved into idealised, symmetrical motifs, seen in the stylised red and white blooms, often hybrids of carnations and poppies. The pattern utilises a rhythmic lattice (ogee) framework set against a vibrant yellow ground with rich orange borders, characteristic of high-status courtly dyes.

Symbolically, this textile was designed to 'bring the garden indoors.' Originally used as a summer floorspread or tent hanging, the repeating floral grid evokes the Islamic concept of the charbagh (paradise garden). It surrounded the court with a vision of eternal spring, utilising the same visual language found in the marble inlays of the Taj Mahal.

STYLING

A Fox & Chave habotai silk scarf can be worn with the classic knot style or a pussycat bow. You can even create a shawl effect by knotting two scarves together behind your neck and allowing them to drape over your shoulders.
