DESIGNER'S NOTES

A rare bamboo Fox & Chave scarf with a design typical of those on the inside of book covers that landed in mainstream publishing in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Decorative marbled endpapers of this kind originated in East Asia and Persia before transforming Western bookbinding in the mid-seventeenth century. European artisans initially reserved these swirling, stone-like patterns for prestigious volumes, including royal editions, Bibles, and classical texts, using them to signal opulence and conceal raw structural boards.

By the eighteenth century, the practice spread to personal journals, ledgers, and trade bindings. Beyond pure ornament, marbled patterns served a practical security role, making tampered or excised pages instantly noticeable. Created by floating mineral pigments on viscous liquids and combing them into feathery arcs, these fluid sheets offer a striking chromatic bridge between heavy bindings and printed text.

STYLING

A Fox & Chave scarf can be worn with the classic knot style or a pussycat bow. You can even create a shawl effect by knotting two scarves together behind your neck and allowing them to drape over your shoulders. More scarf styling ideas are available in this wonderful How to Tie a Scarf book.
