DESIGNER'S NOTES

A fantastic Fox & Chave silk tie featuring mirrored elements from the work Horse, Rider & Clown (1947) by the French fauvist artist Henri Matisse (1869-1954).

Henri Matisse’s 1947 artist book Jazz represents the culmination of his Fauvist pursuit of pure, unmediated colour. Confined to bed following surgery, Matisse abandoned traditional painting to 'draw directly into colour' using gouaches découpés, a method he developed by shearing forms from vibrantly painted paper with scissors.

In The Horse, the Rider and the Clown, featured within the book, dynamic cut shapes evoke the energy of the circus ring: the legs and bowed head of a vibrant pink horse, a whip-like yellow ribbon, and patterned costumes set against an intense Royal Blue background. Beyond spectacle, this plate from Jazz serves as an allegory for the Modernist artist: balancing discipline, vitality, and vulnerability amidst post-war renewal through pure chromatic harmony.
