The tapestries are a famous late-fifteenth-century Flemish series consisting of six masterpieces, five of which are widely interpreted as allegories of the human senses (touch, taste, smell, hearing, and sight), while the elusive sixth tapestry represents the heart or internal moral desire.

Woven in the vibrant millefleurs (thousand flowers) style, the tapestries submerge their subjects in a dense, symbolic field of carnations, violets, and oak leaves.
