DESIGNER'S NOTES
A classy Fox & Chave silk tie with a repeat design of the signature of the English poet, actor and playwright William Shakespeare (1564-1616).
Shakespeare’s handwriting, surviving mostly through his six authenticated signatures and the manuscript of Sir Thomas More, shows a characteristic Elizabethan secretary hand, marked by heavy, angular letterforms, variable letter heights, and occasional flourishes.
His hand is relatively inconsistent, suggesting a hurried, practical approach rather than a calligrapher’s precision. Some signatures display a fluid and confident line, while others appear cramped, with erratic spacing between letters.
Spelling variations and abbreviations are common, reflecting both the orthographic fluidity of the time and Shakespeare’s own idiosyncratic habits. Overall, his handwriting reveals a writer immersed in the practice of composition rather than the art of penmanship.
