DESIGNER'S NOTES

This Fox & Chave silk tie features a repeat motif of St. George slaying the dragon, over a salmon ground, interspersed with a variant Maltese cross typical of those used during the Crusades between the 12th and 15th centuries.

Though venerated from the period of the crusades as a military saint, George of Lydda was of Cappadocian Greek origin and a member of the Praetorian Guard under the Roman emperor Diocletian, dying as a Christian martyr in 303AD.

The legend of the dragon dates from the 11th century, with the monster often interpreted as a symbol of evil or oppression. St. George, as the heroic figure slays the dragon, representing a metaphor for the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and order over chaos. Additionally, in some interpretations, the dragon may symbolise pagan beliefs or spiritual threats that Christianity seeks to overcome.
