Emerging in early sixteenth-century northern Italy from ancestral bowed instruments like the lira da braccio, the violin was perfected by master luthiers like Antonio Stradivari. Beyond its physical form, the violin carries a dual symbolism: it represents elite classical sophistication and divine beauty, yet historically harbours dark, folkloric associations with the devil, temptation, and fiery virtuosity.

Its expressive capabilities are arguably most famous in Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons (1723). In these revolutionary violin concertos, the instrument acts as a vivid narrator, mimicking everything from birdcalls and chattering teeth to torrential summer downpours.
