DESIGNER'S NOTES
White cotton boxer shorts with a repeat text pattern of some of the regions given in the UK shipping forecast as broadcast on radio by the BBC.
The names of the regions come from a mix of geography, tradition and practicality. Many are named after sandbanks, shoals or shallow waters that posed historic dangers to sailors, such as Dogger Bank, Sole Bank and German Bight.
Others are named after islands or coastal landmarks like Lundy, Hebrides, Malin and Fair Isle, which offered clear reference points for navigation. Some take their titles from nearby seas or bays, for instance Biscay and Irish Sea, while FitzRoy honours Admiral Robert FitzRoy, founder of the UK’s Met Office.
The names were chosen for their clarity and consistency across languages, ensuring that mariners could quickly identify their location and weather risks without ambiguity, especially in dangerous conditions.
