Jazz music originated in the early 20th century in New Orleans, a melting pot of African, Caribbean, European, and American cultures.

Its roots lie in African rhythms, spirituals, blues, ragtime, and brass band traditions. As formerly enslaved people and their descendants expressed their experiences through music, jazz emerged as a new form that celebrated improvisation, syncopation, and expressive freedom.

Key early figures like Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, and later Louis Armstrong helped shape the sound and spread it beyond the South.

Jazz quickly evolved into multiple styles including swing, bebop, cool jazz, and many others reflecting the innovation of each generation of young musicians.
