DESIGNER'S NOTES
This sumptuous Fox & Chave chiffon silk scarf features an element from the painting Pomegranates, Majorca (1908) by the American painter John Singer Sargent (1856-1925)
Notable as the most celebrated portrait painter of his time, the artist is perhaps best known for the controversy surrounding his work, Portrait of Madame X (Madame Pierre Gautreau) (1884) the artist's personal favourite. Considered a risqué experiment in portraiture, the original version featured the depiction of an off-the-shoulder dress strap, on one side only. This suggestion of undress of a prominent society figure who neither commissioned nor sat for the portrait, was likely the source of the scandal associated with the first exhibition of the work.
This study of the lush foliage and fruits of a pomegranate tree is an example of a departure from portraiture by the artist, though not an isolated example. He created more than 2000 watercolours, many further sketches and studies.
