DESIGNER'S NOTES

This classic silver plated pendant features an element from the design Bourne by the design company Morris & Co. founded by the designer and social activist William Morris (1834-1896) 

Bourne exemplifies William Morris’s commitment to craftsmanship, naturalism, and social philosophy. The pattern features dense, interlacing foliage and flowering stems including stylised blossoms, rendered in harmonious, earthy palettes that evoke the English countryside.

Its composition reflects Morris’s rejection of industrial uniformity, favouring hand-crafted irregularity to maintain visual vitality. Less often noted is the subtle asymmetry within repetition, which enlivens the surface without disrupting overall order.

Symbolically, the design channels notions of growth, fertility, and the restorative power of nature, aligning with Morris’s broader belief in art as a moral and communal instrument, transforming domestic interiors into spaces of contemplation and ethical resonance.

STYLING

The pendant is a few centimetres in diameter with a 450mm chain, so style outside high necklines, or against the skin with lower necklines. Wear with jewellery of similar scale, such as a simple silver bracelet.
