DESIGNER'S NOTES
A floral Fox & Chave silk tie featuring a the design Single Stem by William Morris (1834-1896)
The Single Stem pattern is a quintessential example of William Morris’s mastery of organic geometry and the Arts and Crafts movement's ethos. Originally designed as a wallpaper in 1905, this motif features a rhythmic, undulating arrangement of large, stylised fritillary flowers and sweeping acanthus leaves.
The intricate line work creates a dense, tapestry-like texture, where delicate floral heads are cradled by vigorous, swirling foliage that seems to grow across the fabric. Morris’s philosophy emphasised the honesty of nature, translating wild English gardens into structured, repeating designs. The palette highlights the depth of the botanical layers, celebrating a timeless aesthetic that bridges Victorian craftsmanship with modern elegance.
