A courtesy face mask with a rainbow design.

Rainbows form when sunlight interacts with water droplets in the atmosphere, combining refraction, reflection and dispersion. As light enters a droplet, it bends, separating into its component colours. Inside the droplet, the light reflects off the back surface, then exits, bending again and spreading into a spectrum.

Each droplet contributes only one colour to a particular viewing angle, so a rainbow appears as a circular arc when countless droplets act together. The sequence of colours, red on the outer edge, violet inside, results from differing wavelengths bending at slightly different angles.

Secondary rainbows may appear when light reflects twice within droplets, reversing the colour order.
