DESIGNER'S NOTES
A Fox & Chave silk tie that depicts one of Samuel Caldwell's Victorian deceptive recreations, a famous image of medieval pilgrims on the road to Canterbury from the South Trinity Aisle of Canterbury Cathedral.
Samuel Caldwell Sr. a stonemason and stained glass designer., was active in Canterbury from 1862 to 1906. In 1894, he created four new panels to replace lost sections of the cathedral's stained glass windows, incorporating some medieval fragments into his work.
His son, continued this legacy into the mid-20th century. Around 1900, he assembled windows using a combination of medieval glass fragments and modern pieces, some of which he acid-etched to match the appearance of the original medieval glass.
