AUTUMN SILK PAIRING GUIDE

AUTUMN SILK PAIRING GUIDE

Workwear's long-awaited comeback post-pandemic is finally here in Autumn 2022. This month we’re pairing a few of our favourite personality-packed silks for him and for her with the blouses and shirts that are trending this season.

Blouses have never really gone away. Their shape and fit continues to evolve with the trends. Recently we have seen many oversized jumpers, blazers, jeans etc. Blouses have not escaped the list of “baggy” clothing items. The opposite can be said of men's shirts. Dress shirts have been around for decades changing slightly in fit from a loose to a more tailored and fitted look in recent years.

We paired this bold fuchsia oversized blouse ‘for her’ with an equally bold and new-to-our-collection silk habotai.

This gorgeous cubist print is based on the painting Guitar on a Table by Juan Gris. Originally an early 20th century oil on canvas, it’s the perfect wearable statement accessory, printed on silk.

The original work can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY.

What’s better than complementary patterns? They are so fun, and that’s why the look works so well!

This pairing brings the iconic criss-cross pattern of a check shirt from M&S, together with the iconic navy and white polka dot bow tie made famous by the British politician and wartime Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill.

A basic blue collared blouse is part of any good capsule wardrobe. It’s hard to go wrong with this style staple. It’s even easier to go right when paired with a bold and lively silk.

Here we’ve paired this light blue blouse from H&M with our Mackintosh Flowers Habotai Silk Wrap, a vibrant multi-coloured floral pattern after a sketch by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Our wraps are roughly 170cm x 100cm, so they can sit quite high around the neck and shoulders with many folds, making it not only eye-catching, but extra warm.

On colder days, this serves as a reminder that sarong-filled summer days will return again, and you can wear it to the beach when the time comes. These silk wraps work for every season.

In this next pairing, the small checks of this blue M&S shirt mimic and match the small fractured pieces shown within this stained glass tie.

This Stained Glass silk tie design depicts one of Samuel Caldwell's Victorian "deceptive recreations", a famous image of mediaeval pilgrims on the road to Canterbury from the South Trinity Aisle. Royalties support the Canterbury Cathedral.

One of the best things about a bright and colourful tie like this, is that it matches many colours. This tie is so versatile, it pairs well with almost anything. Try it with red checks, green checks, a plain white shirt, or a solid black shirt.

When it comes to classic wardrobe pieces, a navy cotton collared shirt has got to be mentioned. Popular for decades with everyone from car mechanics to CEOs, it’s all in how you wear it and pair it.

One way to bring style to this comfortable cotton shirt from M&S Collection, is with silk.

Here we have our Egyptian Falcon & Ankh Habotai Scarf which features Egyptian hieroglyphs, including symbols of falcons, scarabs and asps.

Our last shirt pairing for him, includes our Boxing Hares silk tie.

Not just reserved for March when the hares dominance behaviour is more commonly seen, this pale blue and grey countryside inspired motif works all year long.

It provides a small enough symmetrical pattern that pairs well with a solid coloured shirt, but in this case the light and dark colours of the hares subtly match and complement the lighter and darker colours of this striped shirt from M&S, adding some depth to this look.
