Roman mosaic flooring was widespread across the vast expanse of the Roman Empire, reflecting its popularity and cultural significance throughout different regions. In the city of Rome itself numerous mosaics have been discovered in the remains of villas, public baths, and temples. The mosaics in the Baths of Caracalla and the Roman Forum are well-known examples. 

In Pompeii and Herculaneum preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, are famous for their well-preserved mosaic floors. The Alexander Mosaic from the House of the Faun in Pompeii is one of the most iconic examples.

In Carthage and Dougga, in what is now modern day Tunisia, part of the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis, can be found some of the most exquisite Roman mosaics. The Bardo National Museum in Tunis houses a significant collection, including detailed scenes of daily life, mythology, and hunting.

Roman Britain featured many villa mosaics, especially in the southern regions. Notable examples include Fishbourne Roman Palace, with its extensive and elaborate floor mosaics, and the Chedworth Roman Villa in Gloucestershire.

Roman mosaic flooring combined artistry with engineering, resulting in stunning, durable works that in many cases lasted for centuries, often remaining where the buildings that they were originally housed within, have long since crumbled.
