DESIGNER'S NOTES

A warm Fox & Chave crêpe de chine silk scarf in shades of burnt orange with navy detail on a cream ground after a design by the Morris Company under the auspices of William Morris (1834-1896)

Little is known of the provenance of this design, with a remnant recovered from a now demolished house in Surbiton, in England. Bills found near the paper were dated 1896, making this a design from the very latter part of Morris' life.

Several designs from this period were named after rivers, however it's the peak district valley know as Dovedale after which this design is named, through which flows the River Dove. A dale being a level or gently sloping ground between low hills with a stream flowing through it.
