DESIGNER'S NOTES

This Fox & Chave crêpe de chine silk scarf features the White Hart from the reverse of the Wilton Diptych, seen at repose with faded antlers against a gilt background. A majestic image which imparts suggestions of the sacred and the symbolic to the wearer.

The white hart was a symbol closely associated with Richard II of England. It was featured on his personal standard and was a common motif in his courtly culture. In Christian symbolism, the deer is often associated with worship. Just as the deer seeks water to quench its thirst, Christians seek spiritual nourishment from Christ. The white colour of the hart may also be intended to symbolise purity and holiness.

The Wilton Diptych (1395-1399), is a late medieval English diptych, currently housed in the National Gallery in London. It is notable for its religious imagery and symbolism.

The diptych depicts King Richard II of England kneeling before the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, accompanied by angels. On the reverse side of the diptych, there is a depiction of a white hart, a male deer, in a field of white roses.
